Sexting

Legal consequences for sending a sext, a text message containing a racy photo, are rather harsh. Vermont lawmakers are looking to decriminalize sexting by minors.

  • Minors and people sending photos of minors can be charged with child pornography, registering them as a sex offender.
  • The current law does not distinguish pedophiles from underage teenagers who send photos consensually.
  • The potential bill carves an exemption from the child pornography charge for teenagers, and is currently pending in the House.
