Sexting

Legal consequences for sending a sext, a text message containing a racy photo, are rather harsh. Vermont lawmakers are looking to decriminalize sexting by minors.

  • Minors and people sending photos of minors can be charged with child pornography, registering them as a sex offender.
  • The current law does not distinguish pedophiles from underage teenagers who send photos consensually.
  • The potential bill carves an exemption from the child pornography charge for teenagers, and is currently pending in the House.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – St. Augustine, Fla. is a place with historical significance that draws thousands of tourists each year. Established in 1585 and known as the Nation’s Oldest City, the town provides beautiful architectural landmarks to visit such as the Lightner Museum and the Cathedral of St. Augustine. Events during the Civil Rights Movement also occurred in St. Augustine. Additionally, the location on the coast of Florida makes for a great place to learn, and also spend time at the beach.
Tourists and locals alike enjoy the sites of the Ancient City, but it is the year-round residents of St. Augustine that make the town such a fun place to experience. One local inhabitant is bubbly Titusville, Fla. native Maghan Katrick. The brunette is a hard worker, and manages her time well with her multiple activities. Her noticeably vibrant personality and positive attitude make her stand out from other people in St. Augustine. One part of Katrick’s life that is interesting is her job, where she interacts with tourists from all over on a daily basis.
Twenty-year-old Maghan works in historic St. Augustine as a server at Crab Grabber’s Grill. The restaurant is located on Hypolita St., adjacent to the popular shopping and tourist attraction St. George Street.“The location is perfect,” said Katrick of the restaurant. Crab Grabber’s offers a casual outdoor dining experience with a menu full of seafood options. Their patio décor includes tiki torches and a waterfall. “The tourists absolutely love the patio, they always say our setup is relaxing and cozy,” said Katrick, who has worked at Crab Grabber’s since August 2008.
Katrick also likes the location of her job because of its proximity to Flagler College, where she studies graphic design and will graduate in 2010. The restaurant is only a few blocks from the college campus, making it easy for her to go back and forth between work and school. Katrick came to St. Augustine last fall as a transfer to the college, and has performed very well in the art program since her arrival.
Along with her job and busy school schedule, Katrick runs for the Flagler College cross country team. At 5 feet 7 inches tall, Maghan is very physically fit. She works very hard to stay in shape, and said, “When I run, I am more successful. I feel like I have accomplished more.” She also squeezes in time for photography, modeling, drawing and freelance graphic design. Currently, Katrick is designing a logo for a new business in the area.
With so much on her plate, it is easy to wonder how she is able to balance everything. Katrick says, “Working at Crab Grabber’s helps to keep me on schedule, and it makes it easier to manage my time.”
Her hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Her friend and classmate, Katie Goedert, looks up to her. “I admire Maghan’s ability to work hard and have fun. College can be stressful, and she is able to balance everything perfectly and still perform really well in all of her areas. I respect her so much.”
Even customers to Crab Grabber’s admire Katrick’s ambition and friendliness. Alana Zambrana, a tourist from New York, was served by Katrick at the restaurant. “This was our first time to St. Augustine, and Maghan made us feel very welcome to the area. She answered all of our questions about the town and the college, and her strong work ethic was very noticeable,” said Zambrana.
It is great to have well-rounded people anywhere, especially in a town with such a focus on the tourism. With such a positive attitude, Katrick contributes to the St. Augustine community with her efforts studying at Flagler College, working in the historical district and finding time to do things she enjoys.
